Victoria moves up in Monopoly

Victoria has passed Go and landed among the top 22 Canadian cities vying for a piece of property on an anniversary edition of the board game Monopoly -- at least for now.

As the world's most popular board game turns 75, Hasbro Canada is planning a first-ever edition using Canadian city names in place of streets.

Cities' locations on the board are determined by the number of votes they get, with higher-scoring communities earning high-rent squares. Victoria is competing with 64 cities for one of the 22 spots.

Before a call for help went out from Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin and business leaders Tuesday, Victoria was halfway down the list, sitting not-so-pretty at No. 33 -- behind Brandon, Man., and Sarnia, Ont.

Yesterday, Victoria was No. 16, behind Toronto.

"Sixteen! We're moving baby," said Fortin, adding, however, "This is not a time to feel secure; it's time to continue the good work."

Fortin called the contest an opportunity to put Victoria on the national map. "If you have the opportunity to have almost every kid in Canada trying to buy a house or a hotel in Victoria [in the game], we recognize when they become an adult they might turn that into a reality."

The first 20 winners will be determined by a vote. Two more cities will be picked from among wild-card selections by voters.

To vote, visit: www.monopolyvote.ca now through Feb. 7. You can vote as many times as you like, but only for three cities a day.
