Mayors on tap for 'Bee'

Belfry theatregoers will have a chance next week to see if the four core mayors can spell "amalgamation."

During the final week of the Belfry hit play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Oak Bay Mayor Christopher Causton, Saanich's Frank Leonard and Victoria's Dean Fortin will be celebrity guest spellers, joining the actors on stage early in the show. The theatre also expects a representative from Esquimalt council.

The mayors will be asked to spell "amalgamation," theatre publicist Mark Dusseault confirmed yesterday, squelching rumours that the contentious word was banned while the mayors were on stage.

Other non-political celebrity spellers next week include members of the rock group Jets Overhead and Monday Magazine editor John Threlfall.

When the musical closes May 30, its seven-week run makes it the longest running production in the Belfry's history. The previous record-holder was Urinetown, The Musical in 2006. The production moves to the Vancouver Arts Club for the summer.
